A program that lets a computer imitate an expert for a particular human activity. For example, some expert systems carry details of every type of medical symptom and link these to the cause. This means that if you, the patient, type in that you have a runny nose and a fever, the software will work out that this means you have a cold and not that you have sprained your back.
